The bark of the Californian Buckthorn can be considered the most common laxative used in both herbal medicine. Cascara sagrada’s constituents include hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides. These are made up of two types of glycosides: O-glycosides and C-glycosides. O-glycosides remain in the intestines and have a cathartic action, inducing the large intestine to increase its muscular contraction, resulting in bowel movement. This induction of peristalsis is why Cascara is classified as a stimulant laxative. Its effects make Cascara one of the most effective remedies for chronic constipation. The bark also increases the secretion of bile and is an excellent remedy for liver complaints and gallstones.
Historical or traditional use:
Cascara Sagrada has been used as a laxative in herbal medicine and has been marketed in the pharmaceutical industry since 1877 for the treatment of chronic constipation.
